Crossing the Borderlands

“The towers have been silent for years. The road is almost gone now. Yesterday we found deer tracks in what used to be the centre lane. We walked the rest of the way.”

What we know is very little…

There is an “after”, always will be.

The dogs still gather by the harbour in the mornings. They sit facing the water until the sun reaches the old warehouse. Then, one by one, they leave. Anyone know what they're waiting for?

Every autumn the cranes pass over the valley. This year they landed. Hundreds of them covered the fields where the houses used to stand. For three days, nothing else moved.

The horses began returning in early spring. At first there were only three, standing where the eastern road meets the forest. By June, we had stopped counting them. They don't seem to remember the fences.
